CyanogenMod 11 gives you an option to run KitKat on your old Atrix 2. But, its not without its problems. Fixing them is also not a priority for CM because Edison version for Atrix 2 is unofficial. The following are a few problems I found beyond the FM and GPS apps.

  • The battery drains fast. I mean really fast.
  • Some apps crash from time to time. The most annoying one I found was the dialler. The other voice on the line gets garbled from time to time. Peculiarly, I found that this happens only certain when you dial other mobile numbers. You call a landline, immediately after, its fine. You have to restart to fix the issue.
  • Camera app: The video recording doesn’t work.

Thankfully, there is Mokee. The 44.2 version is the latest Google AOSP. The best part is that it has an official version for Atrix 2 (Edison) and supports OTA upgrades (works only if you have installed it in System 1)!

Download the version you like – Nightly or Release – from the Edison link above. Follow exactly the same instructions as the CM11 install in my earlier blog post, step 4 onwards (use the same GApps). Viola, you have a very stable version of KitKat running on your phone.

  1. I have motorola atrix 2 running official jelly bean 4.1.2 leak 3 can i install mokee 4.4.2 on system 1 and if i want to revert back on my jelly bean can i do that if yes please tell me the procedure

    1. Hi Sanket, if you install any other AOSP on system 1, you can revert back to JB (which ever leak you are using) by reinstalling the same. For this follow your OS leak install procedure.

  2. I read about creating 3 system partitions in above post for installing the rom but if i want to revert back my jelly bean then what will be the procedure for wiping 3 partitions which you have mentioned

    1. For removing the partition, follow the steps to reach system 3 partition and you should find a button to remove/destroy the same.

    1. I am not familiar with bootstrap recovery. If it allows you to create and access partitions and install from zip files, guess you can install any ROM. Make sure you backup you CID though. Unnecessary hassles otherwise.

  3. hi ravi !

i was trying to do upgrade my atrix2 indian version to mokee OS as per your guidance, everything went well. I had copied the Mokee in system 1 it installed and then i tried to installed gapps ! there it showed me the error that the gapps file is to big installation abort, and after that my phone got hang and i had to forcefully close the setup by removing the battery. now again i m trying to restart my mobile the motorola logo keeps flashing every 2 minutes and nothing is visible on my phone . kindly help . your quick reply to this message would be a great help.

    1. Why are you doing it on System 1?

Anyways, try to enter system recovery and re-install Mokee and the correct GApps. Do a checksum to figure out if you have downloaded the updates correctly.

  4. Hi Ravi ,

Thanks for the reply Ravi, I tried doing every thing but my phone is not responding any more … In fact I went to Motorola service even they were unable to retrieve ICS back . Now my mobile is in bricked condition . Is there any ways I could bring my mobile back to working condition ?

    1. Hi Yusuf,

If you haven’t checked this yet, http://lifehacker.com/5853519/how-do-i-fix-my-bricked-android-phone. From your previous comment, it looks like your problem is addressed right in the beginning of that post.

I have been to Motorola service centre for getting my Atrix fixed (it fell on hard floor and I had to get the Motherboard changed) and my perception is that they are least interested in fixing old phones. There should be some solutions to fix your phone and sooner or later you’ll figure it out.

    1. Hi Jeff,
See if you can download the FMRadio APK and install it. I did the same when I upgraded the OS and it worked fine. I no longer use the Atrix2 actively so haven’t been looking for apps.

  5. Hi Ravi, I got an error while trying to intall GAps that you provided (Status 6). What can you make of it? I used latest release version of mokee for edison (150124) and it installed fine, but GAps won’t

    1. Okay, problem solved(probably), I was able to install gapps_kitkat-140619 after couple of other gapps failed.
