{"id":4055,"date":"2021-06-29T07:34:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T02:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ravi.rajiniravi.com\/blog\/?p=4055"},"modified":"2021-06-29T07:34:03","modified_gmt":"2021-06-29T02:04:03","slug":"salary-negotiation-deux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ravi.rajiniravi.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/salary-negotiation-deux\/","title":{"rendered":"Salary Negotiation &#8211; deux"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A few pieces of advice by Deepak Malhotra at a Harvard Business School talk to MBA students about salary negotiations: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Make them like you<\/span>: Check all the right boxes and make them feel the need to hire you.  At the same time, they should believe that they can get you. <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Make them believe that you deserve what you are asking for<\/span>: Justify and give reasons for everything you ask for. They need to be able to understand where you come from and prepare to defend you internally.    <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Give them reasons to justify and act on your demand internally<\/span>: Understand the constraints; spend time figuring this out. Where and how they can give and justify it internally.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Be flexible on components of the salary<\/span>: Look at the deal in its entirety. The employer might be able to give some non-tangibles that add to the overall value.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Don&#8217;t negotiate just for negotiating it<\/span>: If there is something of importance, or if you think there is something you deserve, negotiate. Don&#8217;t fight for every minor thing.  <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Completely learn about the opposite party<\/span>: What are their interests, constraints, . Be prepared and keep exploring.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Negotiate multiple things simultaneously<\/span>: Present all the issues upfront rather than going back and forth. Give them a list of preferences.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is not negotiable today is negotiable tomorrow<\/span>:  Things change during and even after the process. Things might have changed and things might have changed. <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Stay at the table<\/span>: Stay in touch and be engaged. They might be open to sharing things in future as things change. <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Be prepared about their tough questions<\/span>: Go in with a proper preparation about things they might ask that put you in a tough situation. Talk to friends and prepare. <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">On tough questions they ask, figure out why they are asking the same to you<\/span>:  Figure out the intent &#8211; target the why; at times the answer need not be to the question. <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">To extent possible, avoid ultimatums<\/span>: It shows position of strength and comes across the wrong way. If there is an ultimatum given, ignore it. At times, people might have to go back on what they said. It gives a leeway for them to go back. <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Remember companies don&#8217;t negotiate, people negotiate<\/span>: Understand the person negotiating with you. Think about the person who will bat for you. Negotiating with HR is different from negotiating with future boss. And, don&#8217;t let that one person ruin the opinion of the company. <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Don&#8217;t be in a mad rush to get offers<\/span>: At times you want to slow down the process.
