I am not a great fan of songs nor listen to them frequently (except for those periodic bouts of playing a hit song in a loop). But, after watching Bahubali<\/a>, I started noticing two things in Telugu movie songs, use of Sanskrit and songs shot on the \u2018in action\u2019 hero.\u00a0 This post is dedicated to the former and I will write one on the later some other time.<\/p>\n

Apparently, a movie called Maharshi<\/a> started this way back in 1988 with a disco song in Sanskrit called \u2018Oorvasi<\/a>\u2018. This one\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Om Mahapraana Deepam<\/a>\u2018 \u2013 from Sri Manjunatha is also completely in Sanskrit.<\/p>\n

Bahubali has a couple of songs \u2013 \u2018Dheevara<\/a>\u2018 (Hindi \u2013 \u2018Khoya hai<\/a>\u2018) and \u2018Sivuni aana<\/a>\u2018 (Hindi \u2013 \u2018Kaun hai voh<\/a>\u2018) with Sanskrit lyrics. The later actually has \u2018Shiva tandava stotram<\/a>\u2018 in it.\u00a0 Reading a bit about them, I realised that the combo of M.M Keeravani<\/a> (music director),\u00a0 Shiva Shakti Datta (lyricist) and S.S Rajamouli<\/a> (director) produced another favourite of mine, \u2018Agni skalana<\/a>\u2018 in Chatrapati<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then there is A.R Rahman. Here are a couple from him \u2013 \u2018Mangalyam<\/a>\u2018 from Sakhi \/ Alaipayuthe<\/a>y<\/a> and his version of \u2018Shiva tandava stotram<\/a>\u2018 from Lingaa<\/a>. I don\u2019t think any one beats A.R Rahman in mixing classical and devotional songs. (As an aside, just to make my point, listen to \u2018Heera<\/a>\u2018, a Kabir\u2019s doha in Highway<\/a> or \u2018Ik onkar<\/a>\u2018 from Rang de Basanti<\/a> or any of his Sufi <\/a>ones.)<\/p>\n

The other one I can think of, is Bharata vedamuga<\/a> from Pournami<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As I said, I don\u2019t listen to songs that much. Will add to this list as and when, I chance upon songs in Telugu movies with Sanskrit lyrics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
