I discovered and started using it to read feeds since\u00a0October 30, 2006 just after a set of new features were implemented.<\/p>\n<p>The impact it had on how I discovered, curated and consumed data has been phenomenal.\u00a0In \u00a06 years, 8 months, I read close to 166k posts. That&#8217;s a whopping 68 articles, posts, blogs &amp; pictures that I viewed everyday! The following stats just summarize, my reading patterns. I would have loved to see these trends over a longer period of time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>20 people were following my reader shares and\u00a0I was following 12 people.<\/li>\n<li>I starred 16, liked 89,\u00a0made notes on 234 articles and\u00a0shared 775 articles.<\/li>\n<li>My followers shared 5311 articles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mihai Parparita wrote some <a title=\"Google Reader is Dead\" href=\"http:\/\/readerisdead.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Python scripts<\/a> that download everything from your Google Reader accounts, including the entire content of the posts from your subscriptions.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of days back, I moved to\u00a0<a title=\"Feedly Cloud\" href=\"http:\/\/cloud.feedly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Feedly Cloud<\/a>\u00a0as well as <a title=\"Hive Reader\" href=\"http:\/\/hivereader.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hivereader<\/a>\u00a0which are neat alternative to Reader and giving both a spin simultaneously. \u00a0Feedly seems to be the most popular reader that people are switching to right now and serves my purpose well. Doesn&#8217;t show any reading statistics \u00a0or have RSS sharing features as of now (shares via <a title=\"Buffer App\" href=\"http:\/\/bufferapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Buffer<\/a>). \u00a0Hive looks rudimentary as compared to Feedly but has a direct share and follow features.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully both will have\u00a0more features added soon.<\/p>\n<p>And by the way,\u00a0Mihai, who spent 5 years working on Google reader, recommends <a title=\"NewsBlur\" href=\"http:\/\/newsblur.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NewsBlur<\/a> and <a title=\"Digg Reader\" href=\"http:\/\/www.digg.com\/reader\" target=\"_blank\">Digg Reader<\/a> as good alternatives to reader.<\/p>\n<p>.Before I sign out, here is a <a title=\"Dave Winer, Nerd TV, Interview MP4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/cringely\/nerdtv\/player\/?show=006&amp;ext=mp4\" target=\"_blank\">nice interview<\/a> of Dave Winer, the inventor of RSS (<a title=\"Dave Winder - Nerd TV - Transcript\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/cringely\/nerdtv\/transcripts\/006.html\" target=\"_blank\">transcript<\/a>) at PBS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google just discontinued its RSS reader today &#8211; \u00a0RIP Google Reader.
